Convected Charge in Thunderstorms
نویسنده
چکیده
The charge transport within thunderclouds by the convective motions of the cloud is examined. I n the presencc of the primary positive dipole, shielding charge distributions are formed within thc lower and upper cloud boundaries as the result of ion conduction from the free air and ion capture by droplets and precipitation in peripheral cloud layers. Cloud droplets positivcly charged by the conduction current to the cloud basc arc lifted by the updraft into uppcr cloud volumes where they contribute to the positive pole of the primary dipole. I n turn, precipitation developing in thc cloud top carries negative charge to lower cloud levels during fall under gravity forces. The role of water accumulation in the upper cloud is shown to be an important factor in establishing thc non-neutralizing current paths in uppcr cloud layers. The charge transport by the convection mechanism is believed to be a major current flow of storms. The role of other thunderstorm electrification mechanisms is only briefly considered.

Thunderstorms are one of the most important, abundant and severe atmospheric hazards. In addition to destroying a large amount of agricultural products and construction projects, cause many human casualties are annually in different parts of the world (Iran Pour and et al, 2015). This phenomenon is associated with severe storms, showery precipitation, hail (Puranik and Karekar, 2004), and thund...
متن کاملDiurnal Variations of Global Thunderstorms and Electrified Shower Clouds and Their Contribution to the Global Electrical Circuit
The long-standing mainstay of support for C. T. R. Wilson’s global circuit hypothesis is the similarity between the diurnal variation of thunderstorm days in universal time and the Carnegie curve of electrical potential gradient. This rough agreement has sustained the widespread view that thunderstorms are the ‘‘batteries’’ for the global electrical circuit. This study utilizes 10 years of Trop...
متن کاملLarge-Scale Charge Separation in Thunderclouds
Currently available evidence for the mechanisms thought to be responsible for large-scale charge separation in thunderclouds is reviewed. The evidence suggests that electrically charged precipitation particles are basic to the electrification process but that convective motions are essential in accounting for the electrical energy of active thunderstorms. The relative contributions of air and p...
متن کاملRelationships between Convective Storm Kinematics, Precipitation, and Lightning
Combined multiparameter radar, dual-Doppler, thermodynamic sounding, and lightning observations of 11 thunderstorms (6 from the midlatitudes, 5 from the Tropics) are examined. The thunderstorms span a wide spectrum of intensities, from weak monsoontype to severe tornadic, and include both unicellular and multicellular convection. In general, the kinematically strongest storms featured lower pro...
متن کاملRole of Water Vapor Content in the Effects of Aerosol on the Electrification of Thunderstorms: A Numerical Study
We explored the role of the water vapor content below the freezing level in the response of idealized supercell storm electrical processes to increased concentrations of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Using the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with parameterizations electrification and discharging, we performed 30 simulations by varying both the CCN concentration and water vapor...
